Welcome!

Welcome to all of the new students to the weblog for Information Technology for Teaching and Learning 2007! Guess what? I'm going to ask you to participate in a blog. OMG!! (Oh my gosh!) The objectives here are to fully understand the usefulness and application of a blog in a K-12 setting, as well as provide a discussion forum for the class. Congratulations for signing up successfully! I hope there will be many interesting discussions displayed in this platform. We're going to have a fantastic class!! Teresa

This will be great. I have a lot of questions about how and then what/when. Is this something I can incorporate into an existing page or does it have to be hosted by someone else? How can I set up student accounts that are previewed before posted? I do know of an educational blogging site.

Blogs and RSS feeds are very interesting, but when they are discussed the how to's still leave a lot of assumptions.

Looking forward to it. Will we get an IM cheat sheat?

Great job getting logged in early, Susan! You bring up some excellent questions and definitely one of the concerns surrounding using blogs with students. We have a lot to chat about next week!

Hi Teresa,
I may as well tell you, this is the first time I have ever been on a blog site.
I am both excited and nervous about your technology course.
But, you can count on me to work hard.
I just finished my research paper for Debra's class, and I am quite proud of it, if I do say so myself!
So, I am going to spend some time tonight looking up the readings you have on required reading section of the syllabus. Please keep in mind, I take about 3x longer that the rest of our pals to use the computer-it has been sooooo long since I did this!
See you tomorrow!

Don't worry!! As with all tech courses, everyone is at different places in their experience and comfort level. I try to structure the course as flexible as possible: to both support and challenge all of my students. I think you'll be amazed at what you accomplish! See you tomorrow.

Hi,
I already have a blogger account (it's been a fun way to keep people up on what we are doing in the Dominican Republic) so I think that is all I need to do to "join," no? I have been doing some reading tonight about web 2.0 and about how tech gurus and pundits are saying that its functionality is much closer to replicating the human brain - fascinating stuff!

Hi Teresa!
This is my first blog comment, although I've read many. I'm really excited about our class this week. I have a decent tech background, and I'm at the point where I'm most interested in the integration. I know I'll get plenty of info on this throughout our week together.
See you in the AM!

Great introduction today. Thanks for being tolerant to multitasking. I like to grab those "learning moments" when they happen.

Great Mark!! Jump in when we discuss a bit of Web 2.0 this afternoon. I'm only at the beginning stages of understanding the applications/implications.

I've been philoshophically opposed to blogs UNTIL all my neices and nephews created a family one and now I'm one of the old ladies on the site. I can't wait to learn more!

Clarence said...

Wow, I'm a blogger. As with many of you this is a new technology activity for me. I am eager in learning more about how blogging can be integrated in an elementary school curriculum.

I'm in... I have a lot to learn, so I am nervous and yet excited, because I want to learn as much as I can.

Bambi Meets Godzilla

G'day mates! I love blogging and when it's done with students I've been told you need to find an account that you can monitor yourself. Teachers like edu blog...I don't remember the exact name. Sorry! I already read the Marc Prensky article and have STRONG reactions (although not strong enough to kick him in the head). I think that digital natives are DIFFERENT but not as DIFFERENT as he says. He thinks their BRAINS ARE ACTUALLY PHYSICLALY DIFFERENT...or argues for that as a very strong possibility. I believe their brains are not physically different (but could contain some styrofoam). Everyone is different in some way and some of it has to do with technology and some of it does not. Prensky calls for a balanced view of technology but his own view is half -whacked!

This is another try just to see if I can recreate my initial success of logging on.

Hi, I'm on. Yeh!

I had a great time in class today. This is my first time "blogging." I really appreciate the vocabulary assignment that we did for the technology buzz words today. I know it will be helpful in understanding and completing the coursework. See you tomorrow!

Wow! We are in for a fun ride - especially those of us who know little about all of the possibilites. Thanks to all of you who are willing to coach the newbys.

Keith said...

My head is spinning but guess what... I'm not feeling the need to cry! HA!

Kim said...

I agree somewhat with kack -- Prensky does seem to have a vested interest in what he's writing about. He is a designer of educational software -- so he may be financially motivated.

Hi there. Try #2 this evening (hideous spelling error earlier).
I have a home e-mail that is much more reliable than my school one, listed on the syllabus. So if you need to contact me, use
jwesterbeck@verizon.net
:)

I do see that Prensky has a vested interest and his opinion maybe a bit slanted, but I could identify with being a digital immigrant. I had my husband read the article to see if he could also relate to being a digital immigrant and his comment was that explains a lot.

montag said...

I don't disagree with Prensky's ideas of the digital immigrants and natives. I definitely consider myself an immigrant, but some of the things he said about immigrants don't apply to me. I think he is on to something but it's not as absolute as he thinks it is.

As a former inner city teacher I find Valenzas article interesting. It raises the questions of equal access and tech support in the home. Lack of connectivity and access to equipment could be a huge hurdle to student success.

montag said...

Wow! Yes. I would like to give a big SHOUT OUT to Valenza. She emphasizes the need for a balance of hardware and focused, appropriate training so we can help students with "...clearning a 24/7 path through the information jungle." I also loved her term for "mental maps". She's fusing the bling with the literacy focus.

Clarence said...

As I read Prensky's article, I felt like something was missing. I felt like he said that we as immigrants need to do all the adapting. Natives need to adapt and learn from the immigrants as well or their lives will be impacted in the future. There is a lot we can learn from the natives but the natives have a lot to learn from us. Another missing piece for me was students needing to be critical thinkers of their information use. He was using technology for training purposes on a specific topic but did not deal with being critical evaluators of the abundance of information.

Hi Friends,
As most of you know, my school still does not have automated checkout system, so I would like to make a power point presentation that I could present to admin., and to prospective funding sources, to persuade them about the need, etc. as my project for Friday. Is anyone interested in working on this with me, perhaps, my first few slides would be about the automation, and the next slides would be for your use to get updated databases, etc in your schools. I want to do 2 short videos using my digital camera (would like to add music)at Inglemoor tomorrow. Any takers?
